Shabu Lee – Norwood, MA
I happen to be a huge fan of Shabu Shabu.  Chinatown in Boston has a huge selection of Shabu Shabu restaurants to choose from.  Previously, the closest Shabu Shabu restaurant to us was in Quincy so imagine my excitement when I found out about one in Norwood Center.  For those of you unaware of this cooking technique, think Asian fondue.  It’s also known as “hot pot” and basically involves cooking raw meat, noodles and vegetables in a large soup pot yourself, at your table.  You then use various dipping sauces to flavor your meal as you wish.  So if you don’t want to have to work for your meal, this isn’t your cup of tea.

While this may sound like a fun place, having and knowing kids, I would caution you to save this for a date night or with very responsible children.  I know if we took my crew there we would be leaving having ingested raw meat with 1st degree burns on our hands.  With that being said, it’s a fun and different sort of place to venture out to.  Not fancy by any means, quite casual really, but a neat experience and delicious.  I count vouche for the rest of the menu but my husband and I enjoyed our hot pot.  I like that it forces you to eat slowly and you know exactly what ingredients you are eating.

Few things to note:

  • They don’t give you a lot of direction here so just be sure not to use the same utensils you are using to put the raw meat in the pot as you are to eat it (I usually use my hands to touch the raw stuff and the chopsticks to eat it)
  • We always get the Combos which you can choose your meat and then it comes with an assortment of vegetables and noodles
